I have been admiring several the nautical rope mirrors I have been seeing on some of my favorite web sites. There is one in particular that caught my eye ,but I didn't like the price tag. I had an old mirror at home that was given to me that was doing nothing but collecting dust. My inspiration; This this mirror with a price tag of $ 100.00. Anyone can make this mirror for a fraction of the cost.
This is the mirror I have
Old and scratched, and boring right? I really wanted to use the thick, grey, soft, nautical rope but I had trouble finding it here in town. I had some medium thickness Sisal rope and decided to use that instead.
What you will need:
Old or inexpensive mirror
Sisal or Nautical rope
Glue and Glue Gun
Shells
Starfish
Sand Dollars
Spanish Moss { optional}
The only thing I needed was the starfish. cost: 15.59. There are 2 different type in the package. Speaking of which, I would like to talk to the person that decided to package these this way. Good grief it was a pain in the butt just to get these things out of the netting!
I just hot glued the sisal all around the mirror. I made 6 passes. I was happy with the width of the border. I added Spanish Moss that I already had cleaned, to soften it up a bit and add some texture.
All the shells I added are from my collection
I just kept adding shells until I was happy with the result. I didn't want to overload it.
This is how it turned out.
It took about 3 hours and a couple of burned fingers from the hot glue, but it was well worth it, and the cost.. of my mirror is.$ 15.59 { the cost of the starfish.} Versus 100.00
